The Dangers Of Molds In Food

Do you know that molds are microscopic fungi that live on plant or animal matter? Hence, no one knows how many species of fungi exist. An estimated range from tens of thousands to perhaps 300,000 or more species of fungi live on this planet. Most of which are filamentous organisms. The spores can be travel by air, water, or insects, so the growth and spread can be rapid.

Most homes are too negligent in avoiding and eliminating the growth of molds. Many thought that these small organisms are too small to cause danger. Remember that unlike a one-celled bacteria, the molds are made of many cells. It can sometimes be seen by your naked eye. In a microscope, they look like skinny mushrooms. 

Commonly, the body consists of:

  • Root threads where it invades the food it lives on,
  • The stalk standing above the surface of the food
  • Spores that are forming at the tip of the stems

The spores are the ones giving the color of the mold you see. The spores can quickly transfer from one place to another by air.

Are molds hazardous?

The straightforward answer is, yes. Some molds can lead to allergic reactions and respiratory problems.  There are molds when in right conditions, can produce mycotoxins that are poisonous substances that can be dangerous to your health condition.

Moreover, mycotoxins are usually existent in grain and root crops. They can also be in celery, grape juice and apples. Some crops are affected by aflatoxins, which is more dangerous. 

Aflatoxin is a cancer-causing poison — intensive research efforts by different institutions of these types of mycotoxins. Aflatoxins are associated with various diseases like aflatoxicosis in livestock, domestic animals, and even in humans.
