Book Review: 1001 Things to Love About Military Life

I first heard about the book 1001 Things to Love About Military Life when a friend mentioned it on Facebook.  I looked at the title, immediately clicked over to Amazon, and ordered the book without even bothering to read what my friend had to say about it.  Why was I so quick to buy this book?  Because I couldn’t believe that anyone could possibly come up with that many things to love about military life.

But sure enough, the authors did just that.  Tara Crooks, Starlett Henderson, Kathie Hightower, and Holly Scherer eloquently share 1,001 positive aspects of military life through personal stories, quotes, cartoons, and photographs.  I couldn’t help but smile as I read the authors’ descriptions of some of the things that I love about military life, and throughout the book, I often found myself pausing to reflect on my own experiences as a military spouse.  The authors must have anticipated these reveries because they also include special spaces for readers to jot down their own thoughts on particular topics.

The book is a great reminder to those of us who are a part of a military family that, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, military life does offer a wealth of things to love.  But the book isn’t just for military family members.  It’s a great way for people who have no affiliation with the military to get a taste of how we live and why we do what we do.  As the authors write in the introduction, “For those of you who are not in the military, we are confident this book will give you some insight into this military life and help you see why we have such pride in our military and lifestyle.”  So much of what the general public sees on the news and in the headlines about the military is negative.  It’s refreshing to read a book that sheds some light on the positive side.

So if you’re questioning how anyone could possibly come up with that many things to love about military life, question no longer.  1001 Things to Love About Military Life is an uplifting book filled with inspiration, advice, resources, and yes, a list of 1,001 reasons why military life is awesome.

  1. Great review 🙂 I definitely want to read this book. I first thought the same thing….really? 1001? I definitely couldn’t come up with that many. But it’s good to shed light on positivity to crown out all the negativity.

  2. Alaina–yes, that’s one of the reasons we wrote this book. We’ve spent years looking at (and sharing) the research on happiness in life (especially how to manage that in a military life.. Holly and my first book focused on that…Help! I’m a Military Spouse — I get a Life too! 2d ed.) Wallowing in the negative is the least effective way to live (trust me, I know…that was my first approach to this life…complaining). Yes, we work hard to make changes that need making, but we also shine a regular light on the positives. Much better way to live. this book is full of the things we appreciate, admire, respect, yes love…and some we “love to hate” that connect us to this community. And surprisingly, as soon as the book went off to press we thought of others (“oh, we forgot to add…”) and since the book came out service members, veterans and spouses have pointed out still more list items! Hope you add your own memories so you have a legacy book for you and your family! Kathie
