Did you just meet someone you really like, who also happens to be in the military?
In Hollywood, they make the idea of dating someone in the military look extremely glamorous – couples sending each other long, heartfelt love letters, reuniting and living happily ever after, and more.
But, we all know that real life is not like Hollywood.
If you have started dating someone in the military or are considering it, keep reading.
1. This Person Cannot Be by Your Side at All Times
Are you the type of person who needs constant attention and affection? If so, then dating a service member may not be the best idea for you. Even if you meet the person on a military dating site, and they showered you with attention right away, this may not always be the case.
Those serving in the military will sometimes be away for long periods of time, and when they’re away, staying in touch on a consistent basis isn’t always easy. Plus, it’s more than just getting by alone on a daily basis. Your military partner will also likely miss birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and even births.
If you are someone who can’t imagine not having your partner by your side during these moments, then dating someone in the military may not be for you.
2. Trust is Absolutely Necessary
If you are going to date someone in the military, there has to be a very strong foundation of trust. Obviously, trust is important in all relationships, but it is especially important while in a relationship with someone in the military. If you don’t trust the person completely while at home, then you’re not going to trust them while they’re away.
In order to handle difficult experiences, you need to make sure your relationship is healthy and strong.
3. You May Feel a Bit Left Out at Times
When dating someone in the military, there are going to be times when you feel like you’re the odd man out. When you’re with your boyfriend or girlfriend, and you’re hanging out with their military friends, be prepared for there to be a lot of military talk. Everyone is going to want to talk about their bases, different jobs they’ve had, and experiences they’ve had. They will be throwing around military terms and jargon that you won’t understand at all.
4. You Will Meet People Who Are Going Through the Same Thing That You Are
Dating someone in the military comes with a lot of ups and downs, and lots of different emotions. Sometimes, you may feel completely alone with your emotions.
However, this isn’t the case. There are all sorts of groups and organizations out there for people who are dating or family members of people in the military. You will soon find that you have a whole new community of friends and family.
5. You May Have to Pick Up and Start Over
It’s very common for members of the military to get reassigned bases. Therefore, you need to be prepared to uproot your life and start over, at nearly any moment in time. This means leaving your friends and family members behind and possibly going somewhere where you don’t know anybody.
These tips are not meant to discourage you, but now you know what lies ahead when dating someone in the military.
