November is Military Family Appreciation Month. As a military spouse of 15 years, I’ve had to do some pretty hard things. Saying goodbyes that were inevitable, going it alone at life without my partner, and even moving across the country. We have both been through many ups and downs like everyone else, but the hardest task has been raising our 6 children in this military world. These children however, are tough kids. Sometimes I think tougher than both my husband and I. The lessons we have learned through this journey, and the way we have been able to stick together during some of the most difficult times, or children have reminded us why we are doing this.
As the wife of an Army National Guardsman, I know both worlds are equally challenging, but military life is no cake walk. It is not for the faint of heart, that is for certain. Being a military family has changed who we are fundamentally. Those moments in life when we think we can’t accomplish something or get through a tough trial, thinking we need things to feel complete – we know that not only can we do anything we set our minds to, but we are content in this life of ours. Having our family together – even if we are apart for a while, that is all we will ever need. The best part of it all, we take care of each other. That support and care is what makes us strong.
Taking Care of My Family: Military Family Appreciation Month…
As a mom and wife, there are various things I do to ensure that my family is taken care of. One big thing for us is always health – especially when you have 6 kids! Did you know that there are over 17.5% of Americans with untreated cavities? One thing that I love about being a military family is the dental care we receive. As a National Guard family, we have the option of both civilian and military coverage. After reviewing the benefits of the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) compared to my husbands employer, we made the right choice for our family and enrolled in the TDP.
What made us choose TDP? I was amazed at all the care we would receive, such as:
- Two cleanings and two exams per year
- Orthodontic coverage <— (With 6 kids, and three already needing braces, we didn’t think twice!)
- $1,300 Dental Program Annual Maximum
- $1,200 Accidental Annual Maximum <— (THIS was a plus after my son fell and had to have three teeth removed, yikes!)
- One Athletic Mouth Guard <— (Perfect for my two teeth grinders at night.)
So whether you are active or National Guard/Reserves, the TDP is available and is dedicated to our military families, and their smiles of course!
So on this month of November, I encourage you to take a vow to ensure your family is properly taken care of. Don’t let their smiles fade. I made this vow to my family.
