Military Families and Identity Theft: How to Protect Yourself

military-id-theft2Over the summer, we received a formal letter in the mail from OPM (Office of Personnel Management) that my husbands social security number was compromised in a breach that affected over 21 million federal employees. YIKES! We dismissed it, so many other of our friends were also affected we thought it wouldn’t affect us. Boy was I wrong!

We subscribed to the free credit report monitoring offered and went on our merry way, checking it weekly.

Fast forward to October 3rd of this year, just a month ago…

Sitting in the parking lot of Target crying because my debit card had been declined due to a large purchase made. $3800 gone in a Walmart in Kentucky. What had just happened? We weren’t sure if this had anything to do with the OPM breach, but all I knew at the time is that ALL my money from my checking account was gone in the blink of an eye.

I felt like the “keys to the kingdom” had been stolen, I felt vulnerable and violated. Spending such a large portion of our lives doing the right things to ensure that something like this would never happen, all that gone to waste. Well, that is what I felt at the moment – but surely that was not all entirely true.

So what did I do? Well after panicking, I drove home and pulled out our emergency identity theft list I had made earlier in our marriage, in case something like this would happen. I highly suggest everyone make one. You can find one already made on the Department of Justice website, but I made my own personalized one with the numbers already listed on the sheet. this helps when frantically trying to pull yourself together, it ensures you won’t miss a thing! But I still felt empty, like something like this moment should have never happened. Why was this happening to us? My husband had over 16 years of service to his country, was this really something we had to worry about?

Fast forward to today, and peace of mind…

After doing some research online, I found a company called LifeLock. I had heard of them before but wasn’t sure that the services were needed – or most importantly affordable. At this point any amount would be worth it as long as I had my piece of mind back. I hadn’t slept for weeks wondering if there was something else around the corner that was about to happen.

I called and spoke to the friendliest representative, and was not aware of the military discount – yes! I almost fell backwards at how affordable it actually was, I felt like a dummy for going through all this mess alone, it could have been prevented to start. Having that security and peace of mind surely does help, and it you can have that all life, why not?

Right now, LifeLock is offering all military personnel 30 DAYS FREE, and then a  15% OFF your monthly rate. PLUS they are giving a FREE American flag. The promo code to take advantage of this speacial offer for miliatry is: WESALUTE3

Click here to learn more about this great deal for our military, plans start as low at $8.49 a month!

After all the hassle, I feel inclined to share my story with others. I have the peace of mind now knowing that someone has my back. 🙂
