Ah, summer. The beach, vacations, camping, and neighborhood BBQs are just a few things most people look forward to when that last school bell rings. But the summer also brings other not-so-pleasant factors: heat, humidity, bugs, the kids home ALL.THE.TIME. Summer is supposed to be a time full of laziness and relaxation, yet it seems as though every year more and more gets added to our plates as we try and maximize our “free time.” If you are a fitness advocate like myself, your workout routine is just another thing that has to change when the temperatures start to creep up.
If you workout outside, that usually has to change. If you have school-aged kids, you have to find time other than school hours to workout. Then there are the vacations that inevitably put a crimp in your daily workout routine and can throw you off for a week or more! I have had another big change in my fitness this summer: pregnancy. Working out in the sweltering heat and humidity in our garage “gym” has not been easy. But it has led me to find some awesome, quick, at-home, or in the hotel room, gym-less workouts that you can do while you have a free minute between planning the neighborhood block party, packing for your next vacation, and filling water balloons for your kids.

Cardio and Strength Training Mash-up (http://www.fitsugar.com/Printable-Workout-30-Minutes-Cardio-Strength-Training-34785187) This 30-minute workout is a great alternative to going to the gym. It combines body-weight strength training with light, low-impact cardio. It requires you to jump rope but if you don’t have one, just fake it ’til you make it- either by doing an air jump rope (just pretend you have a jump rope in hand), doing jumping jacks, or running in place. Or alternate for a more exciting workout!
Nine Intense Tabata Workouts: Tabata is a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), which has been shown through several studies to be an effective way to workout without the long training sessions. Some of these workouts require equipment, and some are videos that will require wifi. But all-in-all, these are some great, total body workouts that will get your heart racing!
5 to 50 Ab Workout: Looking to get some all important abdominal workouts in after you ate those hamburgers, hotdogs, and potato salad? This is a great, weightless workout that targets all the different areas of your belly while getting your heart rate up. Combine it with one of the Tabata workouts above, and you’ll be sure to get some sweat out.
Feel Good, Feel Strong Yoga: Is yoga more your style? This cardio inspired workout using yoga to get your blood pumping. By the end of the 30 minutes, you will be sweating but feeling really good! This workout is a video, so you will need wifi to watch it but hey, if you’re going to pay $30/hour for wifi at your hotel why not get a workout in?
Personally, I love looking on Pinterest for new workouts. I have never been one to walk into a gym just hit the weights and/or machines. I like being able to look and have an easy-to-follow template of exercises to do, or a video to watch. The most important thing to remember when working out, especially in the summer, is to stay hydrated! So drink up and happy fitness!
