I Miss My Daddy by Acacia Slaton Beumer – Review & Giveaway
There’s a misconception among the majority of civilians that service members are only separated from their families during war time deployments but it’s just not the case. There are a multitude of reasons why a service member may spend time away from their loved ones. Our young family is facing a six week separation this coming winter and one of my biggest concerns was how my two year old daughter, Sophia, would handle her daddy being gone for so long.
When I was asked to review I Miss My Daddy by Acacia Slaton Beumer I was hoping it would give me some help on our impending situation. It was not what I was expecting. It’s told from the perspective of Jana, a little girl who is having a hard time adjusting to life with her dad on the other side of the world. Jana experiences anger, sadness, and frustration because she misses her father. The book provides children with real life examples of how people deal with separation and acknowledges that it’s okay to have these feelings.
Acacia Slaton Beumer used her own family life for the inspiration and subject of the book. Her husband has previously deployed to Afghanistan leaving his wife and their two daughters behind. Acacia also draws on her education in marriage and family therapy to address each family member’s feelings and provide examples of good communication but all in a format easy for children to understand.
