10 Ways to Unwind for Free

Work, home and love life aren’t always easy to balance when you’re the spouse of a military service member, and it’s easy to get stressed under the circumstances. Stress can be one of the largest causes of strokes and heart attacks – therefore it’s really important to find ways to de-stress, and weekends are perfect for relaxing on your own, with friends or with loved ones.

Here are some of our favorite ways of de-stressing over the weekend:

1. Bath-time

There’s nothing better than starting the weekend submerged in soothing hot water, a mountain of bubble bath and surrounded by aromatic candles. Put your favorite CD on quietly in the background and the stress will start pouring out of you.

2. Yoga or Pilates

Stretching exercises such as Yoga and Pilates are a great way of relieving stress and also to teach you to breathe properly. You can get a DVD or download and do it at home or, better still, join a class and turn you’re exercising into an enjoyable social event. The stress will literally pour out of you.

3. Bingo

Playing any sort of game is a great way of beating stress, and bingo is great example of a game that can help you unwind. While going out for a game of bingo has always been fun, you now also have the option of playing online bingo. Whether you want to play by yourself or invite friends around to play with you, it’s not only fun but also offers you the chance to win cash prizes and huge cash jackpots. There are also fun forums and chat-rooms where you can socialize with other bingo fans. The Bingo site butlersbingo offers new players a free to play games just for becoming a member.

4. Karaoke Night

While a night out with the girls would be fun, it’s not always possible. Alternatively, why not invite the girls round for a night in where, in the privacy of your home you can pretend to be Lady Gaga, Katy Perry or Rhianna – just sing and dance and let all those tensions flood out.

5. Walking

Walks in the country are especially relaxing, and something you can enjoy on your own or with friends. Think beautiful scenery and fresh air, and you’ll also raise your heart-rate enough to release those stress-bashing natural endorphins.

6. Gardening

Green fingers don’t always come naturally, but the psychosomatic benefits of weeding and planting are very therapeutic. Weeding makes you feel like you’re disposing all of that stressful rubbish in your life, while planting flowers or vegetables and then watching it grow will instill a marvelous stress-relieving sense of achievement.

7. Reading

Curling up with a book is a great way of escaping into another world and forgetting anything that is troubling you. There’s probably a book you’ve been promising yourself you’ll read for a while so whether it’s fiction, fantasy or fact – treat yourself soon. Perfect to combine with bath-time.

8. Napping

Having a nap isn’t always possible, but a few minutes nap here and there can help you decrease your stress levels dramatically. Even shutting your eyes for five minutes here or there can be hugely beneficial to your health.

9. Meditate

A few minutes of meditation in the morning or at night can do wonders in helping you reduce your stress levels. Simply locate a quiet, comfortable spot and then, sitting cross-legged, take some deep breaths and feel your stresses flow out.

10. Movies

Escaping the stresses of your own mind by entering the mind of a Hollywood character is probably the best way of getting a vicarious thrill. Whether you fancy a romantic comedy, action film or thriller – just chill-out and enjoy!
