Clean your Closets and Help Veterans!

This Thursday, November 15th, is America Recycles Day. We all do our best with cans and paper, but did you know that Americans throw away an average of 68 pounds of clothing each year?

There’s a new website,, that’s helping to change this – and supporting veterans and their families at the same time.

Here’s how it works:

You can visit to request a pre-paid UPS shipping bag to send in any unwanted clothing, shoes, accessories, and linens from anywhere you live in the US, free of charge. Your requested bag(s) will be mailed to your home address within 24 hours. Just fill your bags and drop them off at any UPS shipping location.

What’s more – your donated items benefit one of DonateStuff’s national charitable partners, including AMVETS and The Military Order of the Purple Heart. You can select which of these charities you’d like to support when you request a donation bag on the website. The wholesale value of your donated items provides much needed funding for these organizations to run the programs and offer support services for veterans and their families. Items donated through are also tax deductible.

Each pre-paid shipping bag can hold an average of 15 pounds – that’s about 45 pieces of clothing, shoes, accessories, and other household textiles including handbags, sheets, and towels. You can request up to three bags at a time, and there is no limit to the number of requests you can make. What’s also nice is that the pre-paid shipping bags don’t expire. You can keep a bag or two on hand to use when you need to. And, you can encourage your friends and family members to do the same.

Luckily, clothing recycling seems to be catching on. is helping to keep over 470,000 pounds of clothing out of landfills every week!

So, why not celebrate America Recycles Day by cleaning out your closets? You’ll help our veterans and do a “green deed” at the same time.
