Most of what people know about the Coast Guard comes from the media. They watched Hollywood’s interpretation in “The Guardian.” They were clued to their television sets during Hurricane Katrina. And recently, they’ve been riveted by the glimpse “Coast Guard Alaska” gives them into the CG life. However, these only show small parts of the Coast Guard and what they do.
The CG is so much more than what is shown in the media. Most people don’t realize the extent of the Coast Guard’s responsibility. Their responsibilities reach far beyond that of Search and Rescue. The CG plays an imperative role in drug interdiction and immigration control. They have entire units dedicated to environment and marine life protection. They have a major focus on homeland security and even play a part in international relations.
Even this list only brushes the surface of what the Coast Guard does on a daily basis. They may be small, but they are mighty. They CG manages to maintain all of these responsibilities and more on what can only be described as a meager budget. As with most things, when it comes to the Coast Guard, there is more than meets the eye.
