What do you think of when you hear “natural living”? Do you imagine a 1970’s hippie wearing the tie dyed t-shirt with a peace sign on their bandana? Do you picture a modern family?
There are so many different ways to live a “natural” life. More and more families are cloth diapering these days, “baby wearing,” using natural products to clean their homes, and so many other things that are considered “natural.” The best part about natural living? It is not one of those “all or nothing” type of things.
My family is a middle of the road family I suppose you could say. We do cloth diaper, we do baby wear, and most of the times we do use natural cleaners or make our own cleaning products that are non-toxic. Dr. Anthony wrote a great article on the Dr. Bronner’s castile soap, if you missed it be sure to go back and check it out here.
Some of my favorite homemade cleaning “products” involve water, vinegar, baking soda and a couple drops of essential oils. Essential oils are different from fragrance oils in that fragrance oils are man-made, essential oils are derived from plants, flowers, or other natural things and have not been “cut” with any other oil.
Here are some of my favorite recipes:
All purpose cleaner:
Mix 1 part water, 1 part white or distilled vinegar, 10 drops of essential oil of your choice (a lot of people I know like Tea Tree Oil, but I prefer anything lemony).
You can also sprinkle a little baking soda where you’re cleaning.
Pour about ¼ – ½ cup of baking soda down your clogged drain and pour about a cup or 1 ½ cups of white or distilled vinegar in the drain. Wait about 10 minutes and flush with hot water.
Clearing out the smell of smoke:
Pour either distilled (white) vinegar or apple cider vinegar in a dish in an area where the smell is prominent in a small bowl about ¾ full and the odor should be gone in a day or so. Use more then one bowl if you want.
In a small glass dish, maybe the size of a small glass ashtray, fill with baking soda and about 10 drops of any essential oil of your choice.
