During transfer time there are so many things to focus on; some things tend to get pushed aside. One of these things can, unfortunately, end up being our pets. This is rarely done on purpose, but in the chaos it can be easy to forget that it is their move too.
Just like people, pets feel the stress of moving. But for them it can be even more so because they don’t really understand what is going on. They don’t understand why everything is changing.
There are certain steps you can take in order to lessen your pet’s stress level during a move. It is impossible to completely take away their stress. However, you can make them more comfortable.
First, when you are getting their carrier or crate ready to go, line it with a comfortable towel or blanket; if they have a favorite one that is even better. Also, try to include a favorite toy in their carrier as well. These things will have familiar smells and can be comforting to them.
When you are packing for them, don’t forget their favorite treats. Another thing to remember is, if they have one, bring their bed with you. You don’t want to go overboard, but bringing some of their favorite items with you can make the transition a little bit easier.
Just like people, surrounding them with familiar items can make the move a little less stressful. The other important thing to remember is, no matter how crazy and stressful things get, always make the time to give them some extra attention. Moving can be hard on them, and these are just a few of the things you can do to make it a little easier. Just don’t forget, it’s their move too!
