I don’t know how it works in the other branches, but in the Coast Guard we have a transfer season. Every year a group of Coasties wait anxiously to receive their orders so they can head out to new horizons that summer. This year we are a part of that group.
We submit our dream sheets in the fall and then we wait. Mostly we try to just continue on with our normal lives. We focus on the holidays and finishing off our lists of things to do and see before we leave. We try to focus on the day to day tasks, but orders are always in the back of our minds.
We may try to talk to our families about the waiting and the anxiousness the unknown brings. But, only our fellow Coastie families really know what we are going through. During this waiting period there are feelings of anxiety, excitement, and even some stress. I am sure families in other branches experience similar feelings. It is hard not knowing where you’ll be living in six months or less. But, then again, the unknown is always a difficult thing.
So, we have submitted our dream sheet. We are focusing on the holiday season and spending it with family. But, deep down we are playing the waiting game.
