Poems to Freedom

FREEDOM:
INDEPENDENCE WASN’T FREE
IN THIS LAND OF LIBERTY.
THERE’S BEEN A HEAVY COST;
THOUSANDS OF LIVES HAVE BEEN LOST,
PROTECTING AMERICANS COURAGEOUSLY,
FOR FREEDOMS FROM SEA TO SEA.

FOR MORE THAN 200 YEARS
FREEDOM’S BEEN PURCHASED WITH TEARS.
TEARS OF PAIN, DISTRESS AND GRIEF,
TEARS OF JOY, HOPE AND RELIEF.

FREEDOM’S BEEN PURCHASED WITH BLOOD.
BLOOD OF THOSE THAT WERE LOVED.
SONS, DAUGHTERS, FATHERS,
SISTERS, BROTHERS AND EVEN MOTHERS.

FREEDOM’S BEEN PURCHASED WITH SWEAT.
SWEATING PROFUSELY WHILE ENEMIES ARE MET.
SWEAT OF THOSE ON THE FRONT LINE,
SWEAT OF THEIR FAMILY LEFT BEHIND.

BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS,
FREEDOM’S PRICE THROUGHOUT THE YEARS.
FREEDOM IS NEVER FREE
IN A LAND OF LIBERTY.

I AM…

I am…
I am free to say what I please,
To worship as I choose,
To live and work in the area I prefer.
I am free to print my thoughts,
To read what interests me,
To travel at leisure, to laugh, cry.
I am free to love my family,
To help those less fortunate,
To associate with any man or woman.
I am free to sleep in comfort,
To eat and drink whether hungry or not,
To gain information from the media.
I am free to disagree with leadership,
To voice my opinion, cast my vote,
To be the person that is truly me.
I am living this life of liberties
In a country that has fought hard,
In its continual fight to protect me,
My hopes, my dreams, my life.
I am …
an American.
