Okay, let’s just be realistic here – there really is nothing effortless about beauty right? We always have to do something to feel good – whether it’s plucking our eyebrows, whitening our teeth, or putting on make-up – there is always something to be done, but there are ways to feel and look great without much effort!
I am going to share with you some of my favorite products to make things easier for me to feel good about the way I look without breaking the bank or using up all my precious time during the day. Being a military wife comes with its own set of duties and responsibilities, but that is not by any means our only role. I am a mother, student, business woman, and friend all while trying to keep up with the house and still have a little time for myself! Things can get crazy around here.
Sometimes we forget or don’t realize that the simplest things help us feel better about ourselves and make it easier for us to get things done! You would think this would be a no brainer, but so many people don’t realize that our health plays a huge role in how we feel! Something as simple as working out, whether it’s P90x, a class at the gym, a swim in the pool, or a walk around the park with our babies – get moving! Your body and your mind will thank you! On top of that make sure that you are eating healthy and drinking lots of water; both of these things will do wonders for the way you feel and the way your skin looks! Ever since I started working out and got my nutrition in check I have had the BEST skin of my life!
Face: On top of all of that, I have found a few products that have been amazing for my face. I have struggled with redness, breakouts, and sensitive skin my whole life and it’s been difficult to find a balance between super oily and super dry! One thing that has really helped is Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash: just the good ole basic stuff with a wash cloth once daily and my face feels great! I also use a daily moisturizer, and I switch between two different products depending on what I am doing and how my skin feels that day. Up&up (Target brand – I said I liked to save money) Dual Treatment Moisturizer is my go to choice, but if I am going to be outside or am having a super dry skin day I will use Aveeno Positively Ageless Lifting and Firming Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30. Once a week or every other week I will use Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit foaming scrub. Every single night I use the Up&up Make-up Remover Cleansing Towellettes to take off my make-up. If you use foundation, etc you especially need to clean your face before bed!
Skin/Tan: Who doesn’t want to be tan all year round? Well, unfortunately some of us were not blessed with the skin type, or the year round weather to do it naturally. During the summer, take every chance you can to get your tan on naturally, but don’t forget your SPF! If you are going to the beach or hanging out by the pool use your SPF and then use Banana Boat Tanning Oil on top of it. I promise it still works and you won’t fry! If you don’t have a lot of time to get outside or need a little boost before summer is in full spring, try out Banana Boat Summer Color Self-Tanning Lotion – just remember that a little goes a long way and use white lotion around your knees, ankles, elbows, etc. It says it is safe for your face also, but because of my sensitive skin it really messed me up for about a week. I recommend avoiding it. I only use it one in a blue moon because it takes more time then I have to lotion up my whole body, but if you have some extra time, check it out! To help me out with my color regularly I use Jergen’s Natural Glow Firming Daily Moisturizer. It’s quick, simple and starts to show after a few days. It’s not as messy as a self-tanner and I can skip my regular lotion because it moisturizes too! I have tried other brands of similar products, but always come back to this one.
Teeth: Another simple pick me up that people forget is white teeth! Want to spoil yourself a little? Go out and pick up a pack of Crest Whitening Strips. You can almost always find coupons online or in the paper that helps offset the cost a little, but anything is cheaper than having it professionally done. Plus you can just pop these bad boys on and keep going with you day no hold up or special trip. I only use a round of whitening strips every six months or more because it can be bad for your gums, but there are ways to maintain them like whitening toothpaste and mouth wash. Both of which I use daily as well! I recommend Crest for all of these products because I have found them to be the best product. I have tried out other brands that are less expensive, and I am always disappointed.
Face Make-Up: This is always a huge thing because a lot of people love make-up but don’t have the time for everything! Summer is the best time to go natural, and with the tips I already gave you to keep your skin flawless (or close to it) it’s even easier to skip on a few things! In the summer I rarely ever use foundation or powder, a lot of that is because of how hot it is you just sweat it off, my face gets tan and doesn’t need the color, and my skin get dry sometimes and looks funny with the make-up. I recommend just using a good moisturizer and a little bronzer. If you feel like you need more try a loose and light powder on your face. I have tried all different bronzers and find that it really doesn’t make a huge difference whether it is 99 cents or $25, so get whatever is best for you. As far as powder goes if I use anything at all it’s the Covergirl Trublend Minerals. I have been using it for years, I love it because it’s cheap and it gets the job done without looking cheap!
Eye Make-Up: In keeping with the whole concept of effortless and natural save yourself the time on your eyes and do the same! Less can sometimes be more. If you are just doing something fun, hanging with the family, or exploring on a hot summer day forget the eye shadow and go for the natural look. I always put on my mascara and eyeliner, but usually skip the rest! My favorite mascara is constantly changing, but recently my friend recommended the L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tube, and it is doing wonders for my lashes! My only complaint is it is a little tough to get off sometimes but so worth it! Along with always changing my mascara I am always trying new eyeliners. My two favorites right now are Covergirl Liquiline Blast which is a little more dramatic and L’Oreal Infallible. I always use black eyeliner but you can totally play with colors. If you get eyeliner or mascara anywhere you don’t want it on your face just use a q-tip and little bit of face lotion and it’ll come right off. The last super easy but fun tip is use a little bit of white or cream colored eye shadow along the bridge of your eye brow above your eye lid. Adds the perfect pop and gives the effect of eye shadow without the time spent putting it on!
Hair: Hair can be so incredibly time consuming and frustrating sometimes! This summer try to go a little more natural! My hair has a natural funk to it, waves here, curls there, and some straight mixed in everywhere. I have been trying to let it air dry a little more and take advantage of the funky volume. Many times I will pull just the top half back with a simple clip and leave the rest. Don’t be afraid to try something new like a side braid, or a loose bun, or even a simple pony tail! With the right accessories, any of these will work and look super cute with your summer look! If you want some fancier curls without the fuss of curling irons in the morning try sponge curlers! Wash your hair, put in a little mousse or gel and then blow dry it all the way dry. Roll your curlers in loosely (remember a little goes a long way) and go to sleep on them. In the morning gently take them out spray and little hair spray and be on your way! If you do straighten or curl your hair make sure you are using a thermal protection spray so you don’t fry it! I like the Chi 44 Iron Guard which surprisingly you can even get at target now days in the professional aisle.
Nails: Nothing can make you feel girly like a little polish, but if you are anything like me you don’t have the time or desire to spend 20 bucks plus on a manicure or pedicure on the regular (every once in a while it’s great though)! Pinks and reds are great in the summer, but don’t be afraid to try out anything that tickles your fancy, have fun with it and remember polish remover will take it away if you decide you don’t like it! To make your time worthwhile and your personal manicure last longer use a base and top coat. I love the Sally Hansen Diamond Strength Base Coat and Top Coat best personally. Keeps my color strong and on for longer! There are tons of great brands on nail color out there, I love China Glaze but rarely have the time to get to a beauty supply store to check it out so my other favorite is Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear, comes in great colors and is at your basic target, plus it dries fast which is a huge bonus for me! I personally only use color on my toes because my fingers chip too easily with all the business that my hands are getting into. To keep my nails looking healthy and still girly though I like to use a clear strengthening polish. My favorite is Avon Nail Experts Gold Strength, but they are all pretty much the same!
Hopefully you got some ideas on how to keep yourself feeling amazing without breaking the bank or spending hours in the bathroom!
