Being a military spouse has opened my eyes to a whole new aspect of the military. Growing up, and even in adulthood prior to meeting my husband, I never even recognized the fact that the military involved any more than a soldier in camo pants. Now that I’ve found myself as a passenger on this crazy ride called military life, I realize how many people actually make up the military outside of the service member.
The greatest member of a service member’s support group is their spouse or significant other. We are the hub of the family; we keep the home fires burning during deployments and care for the home, the children, the finances. Being a military spouse comes with a tremendous amount of responsibility!
I adore being a military spouse. Everything about this lifestyle appeals to me; cross country moves every other year, an impending overseas PCS (permanent change of station), nearly impeccable job security, fantastic health insurance. Even dealing with work ups, deployments, long hours and greasy coveralls in my washing machine do not deter this military spouse! With all of the pros associated with being in the military, I have taught myself to live with the mindset that there will be cons. They won’t be fun, but they are minor setbacks in the grand scheme of life in the military.
When I am standing next to my husband, listening to a stranger, acquaintance or friend thank him for his service I feel my heart swell with pride for what he does for our country. When that same stranger, acquaintance or friend then turns towards me and thanks me for my service as a military spouse, my heart swells just a bit more. To me, being thanked for being a military spouse is one of the biggest compliments I could ever receive.
Be sure to thank a military spouse the next time you have a chance. It’s so refreshing to be on the receiving end of a compliment regarding service to the military. Those few words of simple praise can carry a military spouse through a rough patch of a deployment!
